    • Newhall resident Charlotta Alicia Martinelli will turn 100 years old on April 1. To help her enjoy the event, friends and family will be having dinner and listening to live entertainment at her apartment complex, The Willows, on March 30 at 4:30 p.m.

Martinelli was born on April 1, 1908 to Charles and Josephine Prowse in Dubuque, Iowa, where the family lived until moving north to Kelowna, Canada. She lived most of her early years north of the border until she moved back to the USA to work and attend school. She attended Metropolitan High School in Los Angeles and then UCLA, where she attained her master's degree in education in 1932.

She taught school around the world and later in the Central Valley of California. Later she moved to the bay area, where she met her soon-to-be husband Raymond C. Martinelli, a professor of physics at the University of California, Berkeley. They married and lived in Berkeley until her husband's untimely death eight years later.

Charlotta Martinelli returned to Southern California shortly thereafter to be with family and friends in the Los Angeles area. She has no children and her closest relative is fourth cousin, Caren Curren who lives in Valencia and takes care of Martinelli's needs.

"She is a sweet lady who is very robust and sharp as a tack," Curren said. "My mother was her closest friend and relative until she passed away, so now I see to her needs, as few as they are. Her friends at her apartment complex all agree, 'She is a marvel and very interesting, considering all she has lived through and seen in her many travels around the world.'"

Martinelli has lived in Egypt, Italy, England, Scotland, Ireland and other European locales. Her apartment is filled with many of the collectibles from her world travels and she can remember quite distinctly when and where she acquired each and every one.
